Sidney W. Mintz is the author of "Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History" (1998), winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for History (General Non-fiction). Mintz received his B.A. from Harvard University and Ph.D
in Social Relations from the University of California, Berkeley. He held faculty positions at Northwestern University and Harvard before joining the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Government in 1970 as Professor of History and Director of the Institute for the Study of Social Change, where he was Professor Emeritus until his death in September 2005.
